Child Support Attorney in Utah
Careful calculation. Clear answers. Your children provided for.
Utah runs child support through a formula, but the numbers that go into that formula are argued: income, overnights, insurance, childcare. Get those wrong and you live with the result for years. We make sure they are right the first time.

Years in Weber County family court
Cases handled across Utah by our attorneys
Languages: English · Spanish · Portuguese
Jaime Richards leads our family law practice.
Child support looks like arithmetic until you see what goes into it. Jaime has spent years arguing the inputs in Weber County courtrooms: what a self-employed parent actually earns, whether overnights were counted honestly, who is really paying for daycare and insurance. He will show you the worksheet, explain every line, and tell you plainly whether the number is worth fighting about.
To better address our Hispanic community, three other attorneys at the firm speak Spanish: Kevin, Carl, and Roy. Jaime speaks Portuguese. Consultations happen in the language you’re most comfortable in, not through a translator.

Child support is arithmetic built on facts, and the facts are what people fight about. We do the work on the inputs, then keep you told about what is happening.
We Run the Numbers Before You File
At your consultation we build the actual Utah worksheet with your real figures, both incomes, the overnight split, insurance and childcare, so you see the likely number before you spend anything. Sometimes that conversation ends with us telling you the case is not worth bringing.
One Attorney, One Point of Contact
The attorney on your case handles your case. You are not shuffled between five lawyers or handed to a paralegal who cannot make decisions. When you call, you reach someone who already knows your situation.
We Find Income That Is Not on a Paystub
Support turns on income, and income is where cases are won or lost. Self-employment, cash work, overtime that suddenly stopped, a parent who quit a good job right before filing. We know what to ask for in discovery and when to ask the court to impute income instead.
We Are Transparent About Costs
You get our hourly rate and retainer requirement upfront, plus an estimate of what the work costs through mediation. We also tell you plainly what we cannot predict, because the rest depends on the other side and how quickly you reach agreement.
Clear Communication, Always
We answer calls and emails within 24 business hours. When something significant happens on your case, you hear it from a person, not a form letter. We explain what is happening, and why, in plain English.

Request a Child Support Consultation →Questions We Get About Utah Child Support
These come up in almost every first consultation. Here is what we tell people.
- How is child support calculated in Utah?
- Utah uses an income shares model: both parents’ gross monthly incomes are combined, matched against the state guideline table, and then divided between you based on income share and the overnight schedule. The court uses a sole custody, joint physical custody, or split custody worksheet depending on how the overnights fall. The Utah courts and the Office of Recovery Services both publish an online calculator, and it is a good starting point, but the inputs are what get argued.
- How much is child support in Utah?
- There is no single number, because Utah calculates support from a formula rather than a judge’s discretion. The inputs are what matter: each parent’s income, the overnight schedule, and costs such as health insurance and childcare. Most disputes are really arguments about those inputs. Send us your numbers and we will run them.
- Do I still pay child support with 50/50 custody in Utah?
- Usually yes. Equal overnights move you onto the joint physical custody worksheet, which lowers the obligation, but it rarely erases it. If one parent earns more, that parent generally still pays something, because support follows the income difference as well as the time split.
- What does child support actually cover in Utah?
- Base support covers ordinary living costs: housing, food, clothing, and everyday expenses. Work-related childcare and the child’s medical and dental insurance are handled separately and are typically divided between the parents, as are uninsured medical costs. Those add-ons are where a lot of avoidable disputes start, so they are worth spelling out precisely in the order.
- When does child support end in Utah?
- Support ends when the child reaches adulthood, but the exact trigger depends on the child’s circumstances. Schooling, disability, and the wording of your own order can each move the endpoint, and support does not always stop on its own. If you are anywhere near that point, call us before you stop paying or stop expecting payment.
- How do I change a child support order in Utah?
- You file to modify, and you have to show that something meaningful has changed. A change in income, a different overnight schedule, or a shift in the child’s needs are the usual grounds. An informal agreement between parents does not change the order, which is where people get caught. We can tell you whether what has changed is enough.
- What if the other parent stops paying child support?
- An unpaid support order is enforceable, and you have more tools than most people realize: income withholding from wages, a judgment for arrears with interest, tax refund intercept, driver and professional license suspension, and contempt proceedings that can carry jail time. We use the Office of Recovery Services where that is fastest and go straight to court where it is not.
- What if the other parent hides income or quits their job?
- Utah lets a court impute income to a parent who is voluntarily unemployed or underemployed, based on what they could reasonably earn rather than what they report. Self-employment, cash work, and overtime that vanishes right before filing are common patterns. Proving it takes real discovery: tax returns, bank records, business books, and sometimes a vocational expert.
- Do I need a lawyer for child support in Utah?
- Not always. If both incomes are straightforward and you agree on the schedule, the calculation is mechanical. You need one when income is hard to pin down, when someone is self-employed or paid irregularly, or when the overnight count itself is disputed. Those are the cases where the number moves a lot.
General information about Utah law, not legal advice, and reading it does not create an attorney-client relationship. Every case turns on its own facts.
